John 20: 21 – 23: Jesus said to the apostles again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.’ And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit, If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.’
We all sin everyday. However, all sins - big or small - can be forgiven if only we ask for it with a contrite heart. The Sacrament of Reconciliation, commonly called confession or penance, is a sacrament of healing. The sacrament is a gift from God that allows us to strengthen our relationship with him and celebrate his forgiving love. With the Lord, there is no limit to his forgiveness. Those who approach the sacrament in humble contrition will receive forgiveness from him.
Children typically celebrate their First Reconciliation at the ages 7-8 and are prepared for this sacrament through the Religous Education program prior to receiving their First Holy Communion. Adults typically make their First Reconciliation through the RCIA process during Lent in preparation for the Easter Vigil where they enter the sacramental life of the Church.
Do not be embarrassed if it has been a long time since your last confession, and you do not remember what to do, simply let the priest know. He will guide you through the prayers and process.
Confessions are scheduled at St. Mary’s 1 hour before weekend Masses, following the Chaplet of Divine Mercy on the First Thursday of the month, and upon request.
