An altar server (acolyte) assists the priest and deacon at the Mass and other public services of the Church. The duties of an altar server include lighting the candles on the altar, carrying them in procession, and serving the wine and water for the sacrifice of the Mass. The position of altar server is open to anyone who is in the first semester of the fifth grade through high school seniors. Each candidate receives training before serving at Mass.
